News Release - Book Readings to Celebrate Anniversary of the Birth of Frederick Douglass

News Release 

Rochester, NY - May 2, 2018 - Community members of all ages are invited to join the Monroe Branch Library and the Monroe Family YMCA for a book reading and team-building event series promoting discussion on the topics of race, dreams and freedom at 809 Monroe Ave.

In celebration of the anniversary of Frederick Douglass’ 200th birthday, guests will enjoy dramatic readings by members of the Monroe Branch Reader’s Theatre of two new picture books:

• Frederick Douglass: The Lion Who Wrote History,
Written by Walter Dean Myers, illustrated by Floyd Cooper

• Freedom Over Me: Eleven Slaves, Their Lives and Dreams,
Written and illustrated by Ashley Bryan
Winner of the 2017 Newberry Award and the Coretta Scott King Honor Award

Readings will be followed by a craft project for kids and light refreshments. This event is free and open to the public.
