News Release

(Friday, May 4, 2018) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that the City of Rochester has been selected as one of 12 cities to receive the 2018 National Recreation and Park Association’s “10-Minute Walk” Grant for its work connecting youth to nature and the outdoors.

“Parks make neighborhoods more beautiful and offer wonderful recreational opportunities for children and families,” said Mayor Warren. “This grant will help us in our efforts to create safer, more vibrant neighborhoods, more jobs and better educational opportunities for our residents.”

Through the 10-Minute Walk Campaign, the National Recreation Parks Association, with support from JPB Foundation and others, offers grants, technical assistance and support for planning efforts to increase access to high-quality parks within a 10-minute walk for residents. In the first round of grants, 12 cities were awarded $40,000 to work alongside NRPA, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) to develop their highest, best and measurable commitment to the 10-Minute Walk Campaign.

Cities selected will have access to the following benefits:
• Ongoing technical assistance from NRPA, TPL, ULI, and access to national and local experts to support local planning efforts;
• Access and technical support for planning and mapping tools such as TPL’s ParkServe® and Parkology;
• Peer-to-peer support and networking opportunities to share lessons learned and address challenges;
• National visibility through:
o Articles in Parks and Recreation magazine, Open Space Blog, partner publications and national press releases;
