News Release - New Accessibility Open Swim Hours Available at the Genesee Valley Park Pool

City of Rochester

News Release

(Wednesday, June 27, 2018) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that the Genesee Valley Park (GVP) pool will offer Accessible and Adapted Open Swim hours every Friday morning.

“I am proud to see the GVP pool offering a time slot specifically for people with disabilities in our community,” said Mayor Warren. “It is important that everyone in Rochester feel that they have a safe space to enjoy the summer at their own pace. Public pools have had programs for various age groups for years, so now is the perfect time to offer designated pool time for city residents with disability-related needs. By improving the inclusivity of our recreational facilities we create safer and more vibrant neighborhoods, more jobs and better educational opportunities for all residents.”

The GVP pool has a portable ramp and accessible lift to allow the pool to accommodate a wider variety of patrons. This is the first time a scheduled session is being offered exclusively for people with disabilities to take advantage of a great pool on a hot summer day. These open swim hours are here to provide an opportunity for residents who would prefer to go for a swim without the rush or hassle of a noisy crowd.

The Accessible and Adapted Open Swim hours will be offered at the same time every Friday, 9 to 11:30 a.m., from June 29 to Aug. 31.

The GVP pool is located at 131 Elmwood Ave., the admission cost for adults is $3 and youth ages 6-17 is $1.

No shorts or t-shirts are allowed in the pool, bathing suits are required and no food or drinks are allowed on deck.
