Street Maintenance and Repair
The City of Rochester has developed a preventative maintenance program for streets that includes the use of surface treatments. Surface treatments seal the street surface against intrusion by air and moisture.
The City utilizes the following street treatments:
Asphalt Crack Sealing: a hot, rubberized asphalt sealant used to fill and seal minor surface cracks.
Chip Seal: a spray application of asphalt emulsion followed immediately by a rolled layer of chipped stone.
Asphalt Overlay: One inch or more of new asphalt pavement material applied to a road surface. This treatment is used when crack seal and chip seal will no longer protect the road surface.
Milling and Resurfacing: The City can do very small areas of milling and resurfacing to replace the surface layer of pavement.
When are streets normally repaired?
The crack filling and chip sealing treatments are performed on an established maintenance cycle. Asphalt overlay is performed on streets that are between the reconstruction and rehabilitation cycles. Efforts are made to notify residents in advance of work that may interfere with their use of the street.
