News Release - Ribbon cutting on renovated Engine 16

City of Rochester

News Release

(Tuesday, July 20)  — Mayor Robert J. Duffy and Fire Chief John Caufield were joined by City Council members and other officials as they cut the ribbon for the Grand Re-Opening of Engine 16, 704 Hudson Avenue today.  The oldest continuously working fire house in the City of Rochester, as well as its busiest, boasts a new community room, EMS treatment area, and training facilities for the fire companies that serve Northeast Rochester.

“I am so proud to be cutting the ribbon on this jewel of Hudson Avenue,” said Mayor Duffy.  “Not only will be this fire house be incredibly valuable to the surrounding neighbors, but I am hopeful that we will spur other investment and a reinvigorated spirit on this important, historical street.”

Engine 16 responds to more than 3500 calls for service each year, as well as to hundreds of walk-ins who need medical treatment or other assistance.  The fire house first opened its doors in 1905; original parts of the building were incorporated into the new design in recognition of its history while the rest was updated and expanded to meet the evolving challenges of the modern fire service.

“This is a great day for the Rochester Fire Department and for the community,” said Chief Caufield.  “We have invested in the neighborhood and in the people who serve them by providing a state-of-the-art, accessible facility that will be a resource for community groups, a basic treatment center for our walk-in population, and a great place to work for our dedicated firefighters.”

The fire house is also LEED-certified, saving taxpayer dollars in energy efficiency and lessening the operational impact on the environment.
