Biz Kid$ is a free week-long camp that helps kids ages 10 - 18 start their own businesses. Offered specifically to city residents, the camp includes lunch, prizes, and business supplies. View the Biz Kid$ brochure for more information about the program.
Biz Kid$ Camp
The largest and longest running component of Biz Kid$, the week-long camp lays the foundation of entrepreneurship knowledge. Held four times per year, each camp typically serves 20-25 students. Offered to city residents free of charge, county youths are also welcome to attend for a small fee.
Over the course of a camp week, students learn basic business concepts to help them create their very own business plans. Biz Kid$ is a fast-paced program, full of educational games, competitions, and field trips that get students excited and keep them engaged. On the final day of camp, students present their business plans to a panel of judges in a competition for cash prizes awarded at Biz Kid$ graduation.
Biz Kid$ & Beyond
After graduating from Biz Kid$, students are able to sign up for Biz Kid$ & Beyond seminars and field trips to deepen their understanding of business and entrepreneurship. Seminars have delved into banking and credit, taxes and licenses, product design, customer relations, and business simulations.
Biz Kid$ Buddies
Biz Kid$ Buddies, launched in January 2008, pairs up 15 highly motivated Biz Kid$ entrepreneurs with business mentors from the community. These business mentors meet with students regularly over the course of six months to help them achieve their business goals, make positive connections in the community, and improve their financial well-being. In addition to developing their business skills, students open bank accounts with Progressive Neighborhood Credit Union and are able to earn 2 to 1 matching funds on up to $200 in deposited business profits.
Biz Kid$ Real
The newest addition to the Biz Kid$ program is Biz Kid$ Real, which is a partnership with the Rochester Public Market, the New York State Farmers Market Federation and the New York State Fair. A group of 12 Biz Kid$ graduates have been selected to work as a team to create, package, and sell a healthy snack made out of New York State produce to sell at the 2009 New York State Fair. The team of youth is involved in all aspects from product development, to marketing, customer service, and sales.
