(Wednesday, December 02, 2009) – Mayor Robert J. Duffy and Charles Reaves, the City’s Commissioner of Recreation and Youth Services, today announced the dates for this year’s Silver Gloves Tournament. The event, which features over 100 amateur youth boxers from across New York State, will be held Saturday, December 5, 1:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Sunday, December 6,  10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the historic Stardust Ballroom in Edgerton Park, 41 Backus Street.

“This event is yet another exciting attraction for the city, featuring some of the best young boxers statewide,” Mayor Duffy said. “I encourage everyone to come out and support this great sporting event.”

The ballroom offers a unique venue for the event similar to the Philadelphia boxing emporium, the Blue Horizon. Tickets are $10 for ages 13 and up and $5 for youth per day and will be available at the door. All proceeds support youth boxing programs in Rochester.

Boxers in the tournament sanctioned by Rochester’s own St. Martins Boxing Club will compete for the opportunity to participate in the Regional Tournament in Oneonta on January 9 and 10.

“Boxing is a sport that requires dedication and discipline as well as superb conditioning,” stated long-time St Martins Coordinator, Don Simpkins. “My hope is the values taught in boxing will carry over to other aspects of their lives. St Martins Boxing would like to thank the City and all the other local clubs for their continued support of this event.”
