City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, Jan. 8, 2010) – The Rochester Public Market will recognize January as National Soup Month with the unveiling of the unofficial Public Market Winter Soup on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

For hundreds of years, soup has been a universal food source that provides warmth, comfort and good nutrition.

Margaret O’Neill, a local home economist and the EBT (electronic benefits transfer) Program Manager at the Market, says soup is critical to surviving a Rochester winter.

“There is no secret to creating an amazing soup. It’s all about the ingredients,” O’Neill said. “The best herbs and fresh produce are right here at the Market and we’re going to create a soup that will keep the cold Rochester winter days at bay.”

O’Neill will offer soup samples and recipes at the Market office, 280 N. Union St., from 10 a.m.- 12 noon during Market Soup Day.

Soup stories and recipes are being accepted from the public and will be put on display during Soup Day. Submissions can be emailed to pmarket@cityofrochester.gov
