News Release - City Seeks Developer for Former Josh Lofton High School in Center City

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, May 14, 2010) – The Department of Neighborhood and Business Development has issued a Request for Proposals seeking a qualified developer to redevelop the former Josh Lofton Alternative Education Center at 242 W. Main St. in downtown’s Cascade District.

This 52,000 square foot building is located on the western edge of the Central Business District of the city of Rochester amongst numerous historic industrial buildings. Many of these buildings have been converted into mixed-use commercial and residential properties.

The proposed redevelopment of the

Josh Lofton site follows other nearby developments that include new loft units in both the Daily Record Building and the Cascade Building. These new units come on the heels of the success of the Buckingham Commons mixed-use development on Plymouth Avenue and Allen Street and the planned townhouse development on North Plymouth Avenue across from the Hochstein School of Music and Dance.

More immediate to the Lofton site are the City’s comprehensive overhaul of Broad Street; Nothnagle Realty’s multi-million dollar renovation of the “triangle” building at the Broad and Main Street gateway corner; and the emerging interest in the Cascade District as a result by the Broad Street Aqueduct project.

Proposal materials are available on the City of Rochester’s website at www.cityofrochester.gov/joshlofton.
