News Release - Graduation Ceremony to be Held for 22 City Youth Participants of Volunteer Internship Program and Youth Training Academy

(Monday, May 24, 2010) – Mayor Robert J. Duffy and other city leaders will recognize 22 city youth who have successfully completed one of two Bureau of Youth Services' employment training programs on Tuesday, May 25, at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall’s City Council Chambers.

The Volunteer Internship Program offers students aged 12-14 volunteer opportunities that expose them to the world of work. Students participate in community service projects and other training designed to increase their knowledge of the community and to hone life and work readiness skills.

The Youth Training Academy is a job preparation program for students over 16 who have participated in Summer of Opportunity and want to continue with specialized training in office and customer service settings. High achieving participants are selected for a paid internship. The internship consists of 30 hours in the offices of a participating host organization. These host organizations include:

•     Bureau of Recreation Administration — City of Rochester

 •     Bureau of Youth Services — City of Rochester

 •     Dept. of Recreation and Youth Services/Commissioner’s Office — City of Rochester

 •     Office of Green Initiatives — City of Rochester

 •     Edgerton Recreation — City of Rochester

 •     Municipal Archives — City of Rochester

 •     Dept. of Environmental Services/Commissioner’s Office — City of Rochester

 •     Northwest Neighborhood Service Center — City of Rochester

 •     Rochester Police Department

 •     Hochstein School of Music and Dance

 •     Rochester Housing Authority

 •     Teaching and Training by Design

 •     Geva Theatre

“These graduates were motivated to begin with, and now have marketable skills and experience in addition to their commitment to work and to success,” said Alison Alden, Coordinator of the Volunteer Internship Program and Youth Training Academy. “VIP and YTA show what can be achieved for individuals and the community when motivated and focused youth have access to quality training opportunities.”
