News Release

(Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010) – The Maplewood Neighborhood Association is hosting its annual Home and Garden Tour Saturday, Sept. 18 to feature the magnificent architecture in the area and the natural splendor that inspired it. Maplewood is on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. The tour will feature six houses, all listed on the National Register, including:

• Renowned architect Ward Wellington Ward’s first Rochester design, an English Cottage Revival of stucco and stone with a backyard overlooking the Genesee River.
• A stunning Tudor Revival that turns 100 years old this year.

In addition, participants will see the dramatic Neo-Gothic architecture of this year’s tour headquarters site: the Church of the Ascension. (From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on tour day, there will be a free organ recital in the church by an Eastman School of Music organist.)

Architecture and history experts from the Landmark Society of Western New York will be on the tour to answer any questions about the houses, the neighborhood, the Olmsted-designed parks, landscaping and green space that harmonize with the river gorge and beautiful buildings to make a truly unique neighborhood.

Tour tickets are available in advance until Friday for $10 ($8 senior citizens); groups of 10 or more for $5, at:

• The Peppermill Restaurant, 1776 Dewey Ave.
• Parkleigh, 215 Park Ave.
