City Officials Celebrate Grand Opening of El Camino Estates Development

New Affordable Housing Comes to Northeast Quadrant

(Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010) – Deputy Mayor Thomas Richards and Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner R. Carlos Carballada celebrated a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the El Camino Estates housing development in the city’s historic and culturally-rich Northeast Quadrant.

El Camino Estates consists of 25 single-family rental units serving low-income households, and is located on formerly vacant and scattered lots concentrated in the Conkey Avenue, Harris Street, Woodford Street and Neilson Street neighborhoods of northeast Rochester. El Camino Estates was funded by the City of Rochester, NYS Homes and Community Renewal Tax Credit Assistance Program, federal stimulus funds, Low Income Housing Tax Credits and private equity from the Richman Capital Group. The plan includes the new construction of 24 units of single-family housing, including one duplex and the rehabilitation of an existing single-family structure.
“I’m pleased to see this project come to fruition. Development like this is necessary for the revitalization of the Northeast Quadrant,” said Deputy Mayor Tom Richards. “New housing opportunities like El Camino Estates help lay the foundation to create stronger communities in our city.”

“This project moved along very quickly,” Commissioner Carballada said. “We broke ground in May, and now we see an entirely new neighborhood. These new housing units meet the City’s ‘green initiative’ and are very affordable for families. More development and renovation is sure to follow as the neighborhood starts to grow.”

The El Camino Estates lots were selected to serve as the lynchpin of a wider sustainable community development program designed to benefit the area’s residents. El Camino Estates is the result of a successful collaboration between the City, Ibero-American Development Corporation and Rochester’s Cornerstone Group.
