Swimming Lessons

Enjoy the water, learn to swim!

The City of Rochester Bureau of Recreation encourages all city youth and adults to become skilled swimmers and seize the opportunity to enjoy the water.  

Through its Swim Academy, the City of Rochester Bureau of Recreation offers free youth swim lessons throughout the year. Adult lessons are sometimes offered as well, as is lifeguarding training each spring (call 428-7888 or 428-7456 for more information).  

American Red Cross Certified Lifeguarding Training Program

Get the training you need to become a Lifeguard. Classes are available for youth 16 & over.

Spring 2014 Classes
March 11–May 8: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-9 p.m.
May 12-17: Monday–Friday, 5-9 p.m. and Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Re-Certification Class
Previous lifeguard certification is necessary
May 20-22: Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday, 6-9 p.m.

Fees
City high school students: Free registration*
Non-city high school students: $75*, Adults: $125*
*$50 for book and mask not included in the registration fee.
Re-certification class: $75
(required to have book and mask or pay additional for these required supplies)

Classes are held at Adams St. Pool, 85 Adams St.

2013-2014 Free Youth Lessons (Ages 6-14)

During the 2013-2014 school year, half-hour Youth (ages 6-14) sessions will be offered at the Adams Street Community Center indoor pool, 85 Adams Street. map Youth lessons will be on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Lessons are offered at several skills levels. To get started, follow the steps below:

 1. Select participant's skill level:  

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills (Water exploration; no previous instruction; cannot swim)
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Primary skills; Floats and puts face in water)
Level 3: Stroke Development (Stroke readiness, dives into deep water and swims 25 yards)
Level 4: Stroke Improvement (Swims 25 yards, crawl and elementary backstroke)
Level 5: Stroke Refinement (Swims 50 yards, front and back crawl)
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency (demonstration of all strokes)

2. Select a School Year 2013-2014 Session:

Level 3: Increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Levels 1 and 2
