Swimming Lessons

Enjoy the water, learn to swim!Boys in Genesee Valley Park pool.


The City of Rochester Bureau of Recreation encourages all city youth and adults to become skilled swimmers and seize the opportunity to enjoy the water.  

Through its Swim Academy, the City of Rochester Bureau of Recreation offers free youth swim lessons throughout the year. Adult lessons are sometimes offered as well, as is lifeguarding training each spring (call 428-7888 or 428-7456 for more information).  

Summer Swim Academy 2013

The City of Rochester Bureau of Recreation’s Summer Swim Academy offers free swim lessons for youth 6-18 and low-priced lessons for adults (call 428-7456 if interested in adult lessons.) Lessons are offered at six different skill levels, and at several indoor and outdoor pool locations around the City (except adult lessons, which are offered only at the Adams Street Pool).

2013-2014 School Year Lessons 

During the 2012-2013 school year, half-hour Youth (ages 6-14) and Preschool (ages 4-5) sessions will be offered at the Adams Street Community Center indoor pool, 85 Adams Street. map 

Youth lessons will be on Wednesdays and Saturdays, Preschool on only Saturdays.

Lessons are offered at several skills levels for both Youth and Preschool.  for several skill levels at the Adams Street Community Center Pool, 85 Adams Street.  

Youth lessons are FREE; Preschool lessons are just $30 per session.  

To get enrolled, run through the following:

Youth Lessons (Ages 6-14)

 1. Select participant's skill level:  

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills (Water exploration; no previous instruction; cannot swim)
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Primary skills; Floats and puts face in water)
Level 3: Stroke Development (Stroke readiness, dives into deep water and swims 25 yards)
Level 4: Stroke Improvement (Swims 25 yards, crawl and elementary backstroke)
Level 5: Stroke Refinement (Swims 50 yards, front and back crawl)
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency (demonstration of all strokes)

2. Select a School Year 2012-2013 Session:   

Fall Session 1 (Wednesdays Oct. 17 through Dec. 12)
Fall Session 2 (Saturdays Oct. 20-Dec. 15)
(Registration for both Fall Sessions is Sept. 24-Oct. 17)

Winter Session 1 (Wednesdays Jan. 2-Feb. 13, 2013)
Winter Session 2 (Saturdays Jan. 5-Feb. 16, 2013)
(Registration for both Winter Sessions is Dec. 12, 2012-Jan. 2, 2013)

Spring Session 1 (Wednesdays Feb. 27-April 24, 2013)
Spring Session 2 (Saturdays March 2-April 27, 2013)

Level 1: Orient preschool-age child to an aquatic environment
Level 2: Build on basic aquatic skills
Level 3: Increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Levels 1 and 2

2. Select a School Year 2012-2013 Session:   

Fall Session (Oct. 20-Dec. 15)
(Registration for Fall Session is Sept. 24-Oct. 20)

Winter Session (Jan. 5-Feb. 16, 2013)
