News Release - Edgerton Model Railroad Room to Open to Public

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, Sept. 23, 2011) – The historic Edgerton Model Railroad Room will be open to the public this Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Model Railroad Room is located in the lower level of the Edgerton Community Center at 41 Backus St. The opening is part of the Edgerton Community Center’s centennial celebration, lasting through 2011.

The historic Edgerton Model Railroad Room was launched on Oct. 27, 1950, when Gov. Thomas E. Dewey officially opened the “Model Railroad Heaven” with a ceremony that included his driving a miniature “golden spike” into the exhibit's track. The Model Railroad Room deftly depicts Rochester and many of its landmarks in all four seasons.

While the Model Railroad Room was created at the tail end of Rochester and America's bustling train travel era, the magic and mystique of trains persists for many people, making the Edgerton Model Railroad Room a must see.

The room will also be open Saturdays, Oct. 29, Nov. 26 and Dec. 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Edgerton Model Railroad Club is responsible for maintaining the room. Visit www.edgertonmodelrailroadclub.com to learn more about this club. For information about schedule and tours, call Edgerton Community Center at 428-6769.
