News Release - Manhattan Square Park Ice Rink To Host Skate to Commemorate

(Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012) – The City Bureau of Recreation, Youth Engaged with Service (YES) and Rochester AmeriCorps will hold Skate to Commemorate to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 16 at the Manhattan Square Park Ice Rink, 353 Court St. This event is designed to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by carrying out his ideals of peace and service to others.

Skate to Commemorate will be held at noon, 1:50 p.m. and 3:40 p.m. Cost is free, but attendees are encouraged to donate to one or more of three community organizations: the Center for Youth Services, the Possibility Project and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Participants also have the option of bringing two new personal hygiene or other household products to donate. For donation ideas, check out the Center for Youth Services’ registry at www.target.com under “Target Lists.”

Rochester Americans hockey players will be at the rink to meet fans between noon and 1 p.m.

Skaters using Manhattan Square for open times other than the Skate to Commemorate times will pay regular admission. Skate rental is $3 for all attendees on Jan. 16.

The YES Committee was formed in 2010 by the Nazareth College Center for Service Learning, Youth Voice One Vision (www.cityofrochester.gov/yvov) and Youth as Resources.
