Honoring the memory of Martin Luther King Jr.

Each year the City offers an array of activities and events to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth ages 6 to16 and their families are invited to enjoy the following special programming:

  • Black history trivia contest and refreshments followed by a trip to the movies from 10 a.m. to noon at the South Avenue R-Center, temporarily located at 68 Ashland St.
  • A group discussion on race relations in Rochester and refreshments, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Thomas P. Ryan R-Center, 530 Webster Ave.
  • 3 on 3 basketball tournament for youth 17 and under from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Roxie Ann Sinkler R-Center, 75 Grover St.
  • “Skate to Commemorate” open skating get-together at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park Ice Rink, 353 Court St. The rink will be open for ice skating from noon to 1:30 p.m., 1:50 to 3:10 p.m. and 3:40 to 5:10 p.m. Skate rentals are $3 and the admission fee of $2 will be waived with a donation of two non-perishable hygiene, cleaning or household items. Please arrive 20 minutes early as skate rental availability is limited. From noon to 5 p.m., Youth Voice, One Vision: The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council and Rec on the Move will offer fun activities for kids and serve hot chocolate and other light refreshments.
