Mayor Richards Announces Mount Hope Sweep Volunteers Sought for April 21 Spring Cleaning

(Thursday, April 5, 2012) – Mayor Thomas S. Richards today announced that the Department of Environmental Services and the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery will conduct an annual spring cleaning of the nation’s oldest municipal Victorian cemetery on April 21.

“Mount Hope Cemetery is true gem in our city and I am grateful for the committed volunteers who help us maintain and appreciate this historic landmark,” said Mayor Richards.

Volunteers are still being sought for the cleaning event, dubbed “Mount Hope Sweep.” The day provides an opportunity for volunteers to work together in a spirit of camaraderie while gaining a deeper appreciation of the 196-acre cemetery where such notable figures as Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass and Nathaniel Rochester are buried.

Check in is at 8:30 a.m. and work begins at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided at 12:30 p.m. The cemetery is located at 1133 Mt. Hope Ave.

Some tools and gloves will be available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own rakes and garden tools.
