City of Rochester
News Release
(Tuesday, June 26, 2012) – The City Bureau of Recreation is seeking to hire two dozen coaches to lead teams in a series of dance, step and Double Dutch classes and competitions designed to motivate youth, encourage exercise and promote healthy habits. These coaches will be an essential part of a new initiative titled R.E.C. @ the Rec (Recreation, Exercise, and Choreography).
Recreation Bureau staff will hold a Call for Coaches on Friday, June 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Danforth Community Center, 200 West Ave. (map) For those who can’t make it to the Call, the deadline to apply is July 3 at 5 p.m. Visit www.cityofrochester.gov/rectherec to obtain an application.
R.E.C. @ the Rec commences July 16, with the first of three sessions – one eight-week session and two 10-week sessions. In each session, coaches will train teams of 15 to 20 children, ages 6 through 10, on the fundamentals of dance, step or Double Dutch in preparation for a competition that culminates the session. The final session ends March 23, 2013.
Applicant coaches should be able to demonstrate a proven history working with youth in the areas of dance, step and Double Dutch. Preference will be given to coaches who have worked with ages 6 through 10.
Coaches should expect to work about six hours per week over an eight- or 10-week session, including two Saturdays. Practices are typically two to three times per week, ranging from one to two hours. Successful coaches may be eligible to coach more than one session.
Head coaches, who must be 18 or over, will be paid $15 per hour. Assistant coaches, who must be at least 16, will be paid $12 per hour.
The Greater Rochester Health Foundation is funding the R.E.C. @ Rec with a $175,000 grant as part of their 5-2-1-0 Healthy Hero campaign.
