News Release

(Friday, August 24, 2012) — The historic Edgerton Model Railroad Room will be open to the public this Saturday, Aug. 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Recreation Center and Railroad Room are at 41 Backus Street. The Model Railroad Room will also be open to the public the last Saturday of each month throughout 2012 (September 29, October 27, November 24, plus several special holiday openings in December, dates TBA).

Within the Edgerton Community Center is an historic model train room, whose dazzling displays deftly depict Rochester and many of its natural and built landmarks, in all four seasons. The Edgerton Model Railroad Room was launched on October 27, 1950, when Governor Thomas E. Dewey officially opened the "Model Railroad Heaven" with a ceremony that included his driving a miniature "golden spike" into the exhibit's track!

The Model Railroad Room was created at the tail end of Rochester and America's bustling train travel era. But the magic and mystique of trains persists for many--young, old, or in between. The Edgerton Model Railroad Room is a must see-- for train buffs, and for those who could be!

Thanks to the volunteers of the Edgerton Model Railroad Club for stewarding this community treasure. Visit www.edgertonmodelrailroadclub.com to learn more about this club.
