News Release - Statement by Mayor Thomas S. Richards on WinnDevelopment Acquisition of Sibley Building

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, Nov. 16, 2012) – The WinnDevelopment acquisition of the Sibley Building is great news for Rochester. I am pleased to know that this historic landmark will continue to be an anchor for Downtown and contribute to its growing vibrancy.

WinnCompanies has a strong passion for this project and a proven track record for completing renovations on historic structures. Their development plan is solid and they have made a long-term commitment to this community to revitalize this iconic property.

This acquisition is a continuation of the significant private and public investment that is taking place in our Center City. It will complement such important projects as Midtown Rising, Windstream’s relocation, R.I.T.’s acquisition of the Rochester Savings Bank, the addition of the Downtown Police Detail at the Sibley Building and the RGRTA Transit Center, helping to bring this whole area together.

Our vision for Downtown is not the vision of 20 years ago. We are adapting appropriately for our future and the needs of Downtown’s changing character which includes a growing residential component, a more pedestrian friendly environment and getting the buses off of Main Street. We are confident that this area will become a magnet where people, education and business desire to be. We are thankful to Winn for embracing and understanding our new vision.
