News Release - Mayor Richards Announces Special Programming at City Community Centers to Celebrate Black History Month

(Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013) – Mayor Thomas S. Richards and the City’s Department of Recreation and Youth Services are pleased to announce the many activities and events planned for youth and families at City Community Centers in celebration of Black History Month. The full schedule of events being hosted at various centers is as follows:

Adams Street Community Center, 85 Adams St.:
Thursday, Feb. 14, 4 p.m.
Black History Month and Valentine’s Day social. This event includes plenty of sweet-treats, trivia and prizes.

Monday, Feb. 18, 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Presidential-themed trivia games and an aquatic obstacle will be set up in the shallow end of the pool. Kids will use their swimming skills to traverse through the challenges. All skill levels may participate.

South Avenue Community Center, 999 South Ave.:
Friday, Feb. 15, 4 to 6 p.m.
A “name and face” matchup contest of important figures in African-American history will be held for youth ages 10 to 16 and their families. Movie tickets will be given out as prizes. The center will also feature a wall gallery of famous African-Americans, with daily tributes to those who excelled in arts, sports and entertainment.

Carter Street Community Center, 500 Carter St.:
Thursday, Feb.14, 4 to 6 p.m.
Educational activities with a focus on African-American influences on music are planned for families and youth of all ages.

David F. Gantt Community Center--Marketview Lodge, 136 First St.:
Monday, Feb.18, 1 to 3 p.m.
A drawing contest of prominent figures in Black history will be held for youth ages 12 and under. Prizes will be awarded and light refreshments will be served.

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2 to 4 p.m.
Rec center staff members will assist youth ages 12 to 16 in preparing traditional African-American dishes and families and kids will sample the finished dishes.

Wednesday, Feb. 20, 1 to 3 p.m.
A coloring contest with a focus on women who have played major roles in the advancement of Blacks in America will be held for kids ages 12 and under. Light refreshments will be served.

Thursday, Feb. 21, 2 to 4 p.m.
Rec center staff members will lead discussions with youth ages 13 to 16 on the topics of racism and the history of African-Americans before and after slavery. Families are strongly encouraged to participate. Light refreshments will be served.

Friday, Feb. 22, 2 to 3 p.m.
Youth ages 12 and under will have a fun time putting together puzzles of important figures in Black history and discussing each historical figure’s contributions to the advancement of African-Americans. Light refreshments will be served and families are also invited help with this activity. Prizes will be given. 

Thomas P. Ryan Community Center, 530 Webster Ave.:
Friday, Feb. 22, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
A fashion show and dance will be hosted in the School #33 gym. Pizza and drinks will be served and participants are asked to donate three non-perishable food items.

Avenue D Community Center, 200 Avenue D:
Thursday, Feb. 21, 3 p.m.
A Black history celebration dinner and presentation of house league trophies will be held to acknowledge honor roll students and reading program award winners.
The center will also post a daily trivia question about a historical African-American figure. The first participant to correctly identify the person depicted in the questions wins a prize--weekdays throughout the month of February.
