City of Rochester

News Release

Dozens of activities to honor Rochester’s past, celebrate its future along the Genesee River

(Monday, Sept. 30, 2013) — Mayor Thomas S. Richards and the City Department of Recreation and Youth Services invite the community to enjoy more than 40 autumn activities during the Rochester River Romance Weekend, October 4 through 6.

“River Romance Weekend offers an excellent opportunity to have a great time while also experiencing Rochester from the perspective of the Genesee River between the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario,” said Mayor Richards. “River Romance showcases the natural beauty of our waterways and highlights their connection to the many trails, parks, neighborhoods and commercial districts that contribute to the vibrancy of Rochester. I encourage all residents to participate in River Romance and experience the beauty and vitality of the Genesee River.”

This year’s River Romance Weekend pays tribute to the Civil War period of Rochester’s history by honoring a point in the city’s past that continues to influence its future. Events include tours of historic sites along the river gorge, guided walks and bike rides on the river trails and surrounding neighborhoods, Civil war re-enactments, river cruises, kayak excursions and, of course, romance. The River Romance Weekend signature event kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, when hundreds of married couples will gather on the Pont de Rennes pedestrian bridge to honor their own pasts and celebrate their futures by renewing their wedding vows.

River Romance, an autumn tradition in Rochester for more than 25 years, is sponsored by the City, MVP Health Care, City Newspaper and many other supporters and volunteers.
