Chief of Staff

Cooney-JeremyThe Chief of Staff is the senior advisor to the Mayor and oversees the operation of the Mayor’s Office.  The Chief of Staff also leads the City’s intergovernmental affairs agenda and has direct oversight of the Department of Recreation and Youth Services and the Rochester Public Library

Jeremy A. Cooney was appointed as Chief of Staff on January 1, 2014. Mr. Cooney most recently served as Vice President of Development for the YMCA of Greater Rochester, where he successfully expanded the Y’s robust philanthropic program. Prior to joining the Y’s senior leadership team, Mr. Cooney worked as an attorney for Ward Greenberg Heller & Reidy LLP, as a fundraiser for Hobart & William Smith Colleges, and served as an aide to Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter (NY-25).

Mr. Cooney graduated with a BA cum laude in Public Policy Studies from Hobart College in Geneva, NY, where he was Student Body President and wrote an honors thesis on the charter school movement and its impact on urban school districts.  Mr. Cooney also obtained his J.D. cum laude from Albany Law School of Union University, where he was Class President, Student Trustee, and a member of the Editorial Board for the Albany Law Review.  Mr. Cooney is admitted to practice and a member of the New York State Bar.

Mr. Cooney has a passion for community engagement and is active in a number of charitable and civic organizations. He currently serves on the boards of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, Hochstein School of Music & Dance, and Episcopal SeniorLife Communities. Additionally, he has been active in a number of local organizations including Delphi Drug & Alcohol Council, Planned Parenthood, the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, and the Seneca-Waterways Council for the Boy Scouts of America, for which he is an Eagle Scout.

Mr. Cooney was raised in the South Wedge, attended schools in the Rochester City School District and graduated from the School of the Arts.  Today, he resides in the Highland Park Neighborhood and enjoys reading, sporting events, and the philharmonic.
