News Release

(Wednesday, February, 19, 2014) – The City of Rochester’s Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP) and The RochesterWorks! Youth Summer Employment Program (SYEP) are seeking community partners to deliver structured, project-based, paid work experiences for youth during the summer of 2014.

A Request for Applications posted on the City website seeks to identify local for-profit, not-for-profit and faith-based organizations with an individual or a team that has the skill, experience, work space, computer facilities and payroll ability to provide a summer work experience in such fields as career exploration, youth workforce development, multimedia production entrepreneurship, community organizing, community service and youth arts opportunities. The program seeks to place more than 625 youth ages 14 to 20 in paid, structured work experiences each summer. State and local funding is expected to provide selected host employers with funds to compensate their participants. With a total budget not to exceed $1,600 per youth, each selected host work site must serve at least 10 participants who will each work 20 hours per week for a total of 120 hours from July 7 through Aug. 15, 2014.

Information and applications are accessible at www.cityofrochester.gov/soop. Applications will be accepted through Noon on March 12, 2014. Applications will be evaluated based on creativity, specificity of experience, demonstrated expertise in project themes, level of youth engagement, measurable outcomes, contributing partnerships, fiscal capacity and overall cost efficiency. Selected sites will be notified in June.

It is important that applicants attend a mandatory bidders' conference at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 26, 2014 at the United Way of Rochester, Eastman Room, 75 College Ave.
