Meet the 2014 Summer Interns

The interns featured below served across all departments and have different plans for how they will apply their skills in the future. Explore their biographies to learn about the internship program from the participants themselves.

Justin Anderson 

Justin Anderson attended Greece Arcadia High School. He is interning for City Security in the Special Operations Division of the Rochester Police Department. In the future, he plans on becoming a police officer and hopes to stay in Rochester to work for the RPD.

Michael Andrews 

Michael Andrews graduated from Union-Endicott High school. He currently is a rising senior at the Rochester Institute of Technology studying Civil Engineering Technology. He is interning with the Bureau of Water designing net zero energy houses and would like to get a deeper understanding of hydraulics and geospatial information systems.

Brandon Anthony 

Brandon Anthony is an intern with the Department of Environmental Services in Street Design. He is a rising senior studying Civil Engineering Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology. He is from North Carolina, where he went to Northeast Guilford High School. After graduation, he wants to move out west and get a job in the construction field. He hopes his internship this summer helps to develop his professional skills as well as his knowledge of the civil engineering field.

Carolyn Arnold 

Carolyn Arnold has been an intern with the Division of Equipment Services since March of 2013.  She is currently pursuing a degree in Automotive Technology at Monroe Community College and was able to take advantage of the strong partnership between MCC and the City.  Working alongside master technicians, she is learning a great deal about cars and fleet maintenance and is working to become an integral part of Rochester's vehicular infrastructure.

Mysty Moon Ayala 

Mysty Moon Ayala attended School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas. In 2010, she began attending RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf and, while there, successfully completed courses related to engineering technology and computer-aided drafting. Mysty sees herself continuing to use CAD for architecture as she enjoys drawing houses, and also dreams of either drawing cartoons to make movies, or designing houses for animals. She is interning with the Department of Environmental Services

Hannah Barry 

Hannah Barry is a senior at Rochester Institute of Technology studying advertising and public relations and is now an intern in the Communications Bureau. She is passionate about being engaged in the community and has been actively involved in International Sister Cities of Rochester since she returned last year from Rochester’s sister city, Rennes, France. After graduation, Hannah hopes to put her public relations skills to work in the non-profit sector.

Leslie Beard 

Leslie Beard attended Joseph C Wilson Magnet High School. She is now attending Monroe Community College for criminal justice. After MCC, she plans on continuing at SUNY Brockport and getting her bachelor's in criminal justice. In the future, Leslie plans on starting off as an R&D officer and eventually become a patrol officer. Through this internship with the Rochester Police Department, she looks forward to becoming more familiar with other career opportunities and networking with new people.

Damien Bell  

Damien Bell is interning with the Rochester Police Department. He graduated from Irondequoit High School and is now a sophomore at Monroe Community College. He would love to become a police officer for the City as he wants to serve and protect the community in which he has grown up. He hopes to meet new police officers and make new friends while serving his internship and also hopes to take advantage of working in the Animal Control Department, as his ultimate goal is to become a K9 officer.

Christopher Black 

Christopher Black went to Greece Arcadia High School will be completing his third semester at Monroe Community College. Chris is a Criminal Justice Major and is working at the Quarter Master and Property Clerk Office of the Rochester Police Department. His goal is to become a Police Officer for RPD and he is viewing and participating in first hand operations on how evidence and police property is distributed. Chris looks foward to gaining even more knowledge and experience in the field.

   
     

Jacob Bott 

Jacob Bott attended Red Jacket Central High School and is currently a senior at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and will graduate this fall. His major is criminal justice and he is an intern at the Rochester Police Department. From his internship, Jacob hopes to gain experience and knowledge that may benefit his future aspirations of joining the U.S. Secret Service.

Robin Boutand 

Robin Boutand graduated from Belmont High School in Massachusetts. This fall he will be going into his final year of Rochester Institute of Technology’s five year Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Technology program. He is interning with the City’s Building Services Department this summer and wants to get work experience and exposure, as well as figure out what his strengths and weaknesses are within this environment. His future aspiration is to see the world.

Madelaine Britt 

Madelaine Britt is a rising junior studying environmental design and political science at the University at Buffalo and a proud intern in the City’s Southeast Neighborhood Service Center. She hopes this internship brings with it the opportunity to see first-hand the issues Rochester residents are facing and she will learn how she can be an active participant in solving these problems so as to better her community.

Katie Brown 

Katie Brown graduated from Pittsford Sutherland High School and now attends the University of New Hampshire. She is a rising junior majoring in both psychology and justice studies, and plans to eventually get her PhD in psychology. Currently, she is interning with the Rochester Police Department in the Major Crimes Unit. Katie hopes to gain real work experience within the criminal justice system to better prepare herself for her future.

Briana Chamberlain 

Briana Chamberlain is a senior at Canisius College studying political science and urban studies. Her passion is working with urban youth and has worked in the City Recreation Department for five years. When she graduates, Briana hopes to use her skills and knowledge of urban youth to become a grant writer and fund programs specifically to benefit the young minds of our future. Briana is currently interning in the Office of the Mayor.

Jacob Chastang 

Jacob Chastang is currently attending Rochester Institute of Technology majoring in Engineering Technology. He has completed four years of active duty in the US Marine Corps Communication Platoon at Camp Hansen in Okinawa, Japan in 2005 and 2006 as Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge and in the 9th Communications Battalion Armory at Camp Pendleton in California from 2006 to 2008. He currently serves in the Air Force 914th Air Wing in Niagara Falls for NY Fuel Systems Maintenance. Jacob is interning with the Information Technology Department. 

   
     

Sahil Chaudhrey 

Sahil Chaudhrey graduated from the International School of Bangkok, and has gone on to study Information Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he will be a senior this fall. He is interning in City’s Information Technology Department and hopes to gain valuable experience and learn new things that would help him improve his skills. His goal for the future is to become a web developer or Database Administrator.

Brandon Contreras 

Brandon Contreras is a senior at Clarion University and will be finished with his studies upon the completion of his internship with the Rochester Police Department. He’s majoring in Rehabilitative Science and Human Services with a concentration in Substance Abuse.  In the very near future, he hopes to become a Rochester Police Officer and join his dad, an RPD Police Officer, on the job.

Dalton Cooper 

Dalton Cooper is a rising sophomore at Whitman College. At the moment his major is undeclared, but plans on studying math and economics with hopes of working in urban planning at some point down the line. This summer he is interning with the Southeast Neighborhood Service Center, where he hopes to learn about planning policy at the ground level, apply what he’s learning in the field of economics on a small scale, and work towards continuing the remarkable renaissance that Rochester’s undergoing.

Dori Copenhaver 

Dori Copenhaver is a graduate of Rush-Henrietta Senior High School and she will graduate from SUNY Cortland this August with a degree in Criminology.  Dori is currently interning with the Rochester Police Department’s Research and Evaluation Unit. Dori is enjoying her internship and has learned a lot about the process of becoming a police officer.  She’s planning on continuing her studies at the University of North Texas in Dallas and she has applied to take the Dallas Police Department’s police officer exam.  She hopes to eventually work as a criminal profiler for the FBI.

Alessandria Dey 

Alessandria Dey attended Fairport High School and graduated in 2011. Currently, she is a rising senior at Hamilton College and will be graduating next spring with a degree in History. She is interning this summer with the Rochester Police Department at the Southeast Neighborhood Service Center. She is interested in a career within the criminal justice sector and hopes that this summer will give her first hand experience in the field.

Brodie Egan 

Brodie Egan is an intern within the Rochester Police Department Auto Pound Division. He graduated from McQuaid High School and is a rising junior at Niagara University studying Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He hopes to gain valuable experience that will ensure his future professional career as a police officer. His aspirations for the future are to work for the city as an officer while making a difference throughout the community.

Mawia Elawad 

Mawia Elawad is a School of the Arts graduate who is currently a rising sophomore at Alfred University. She is currently interning at the Southwest Neighborhood Service Center. She hopes to expand her applicability, experiences and customer service skills for future employment opportunities following graduation.

Jonathan Francisco  

Jonathan Francisco just finished his freshman year at St. John Fisher College.  He’s pursuing a dual major in Legal Studies and History.  He’s interning with the Rochester Police Department’s Westside Patrol Division where he has learned a lot about the law enforcement process.  He’s enjoying working with and learning from police officers. Jonathan plans on graduating in 2016 and hopes to become a prosecuting attorney.

Aeysha Gantt  

Aeysha Gantt attended James Monroe High School. She is currently in her last semester in the criminal justice program at Bryant and Stratton College. Aeysha is interning with the Rochester Police Department (police academy/training). Her future aspirations include becoming a child protective service worker and a police officer. Ayesha has dreamed of becoming a police officer since she was a young girl. With the experience Ayesha is receiving from her internship, she is more eager to pursue her career in law enforcement.

Andrew Grant 

Andrew Grant is originally from Connecticut. He graduated from Hamden High School in Hamden, CT and now attends MCC as a rising junior majoring in Computer Engineering Technology. He is interning at Client Services in the Information Technology Department. His future aspiration is to someday work for Microsoft and hopes to get a great deal of experience doing different things in this field during the summer. He likes the technical aspect of being able to fix and repair computers and their software.

Thomas Hilaire 

Thomas Hilaire is a St. Thomas Aquinas alumni. Currently interning for the Rochester Police Department, Thomas would like to become a police officer in the future. With this summer’s internship, Thomas enjoys experiencing different aspects of law enforcement which will enable him to accomplish his future endeavors.

Ty House 

Ty House is a police cadet for the Rochester Police Department. He is in the criminal justice program at Monroe Community College, majoring in Police Science. After graduating from Greece Athena High School, Ty set a goal to become a police officer. To serve, protect and give back to his community. From the police cadet program, Ty has learned the importance of being prompt and always prepared.

Nicole Howley 

Nicole Howley graduated from Barry Goldwater High School in Phoenix, Arizona in the spring of 2011. She now a rising senior at Rochester Institute of Technology pursuing a degree in Public Policy and hopes to be accepted into Teach for America after graduation. This summer, she is learning more about the Rochester area, City government, and policy on the local level as an intern in the Southeast Neighborhood Service Center with the Department of Neighborhood Preservation

Chris Iacuzzi graduated from Spencerport High School and currently attends Monroe Community College. He is majoring in Criminal Justice and interning with the Rochester Police Department. Chris is a Police Cadet and hopes to become a Police Officer with the RPD in the near future.

Charles Irwin Jr. 

Charles Irwin Jr. graduated from Brockport Central High School. He is now a rising junior studying Criminal Justice at Monroe Community College. Interning with the Rochester Police Department, Charles would like to become a police officer. Using his law enforcement skills, Charles would like to help lower Rochester’s crime rate making the community a safer place to live.

Jasmin Jackson 

Jasmin Jackson is a Rochester native who graduated from Rush-Henrietta High School in 2011. Now, she is a rising senior at the University at Buffalo studying Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources. Dean Kay Jr.   

Dean Kay Jr. attended Bishop Kearney High School and will be entering his fifth semester at Monroe Community College. Kay is a Criminal Justice and Police Science major and is interning for the Rochester Police Department. His future aspirations include becoming a police officer with the RPD.

   
     

Duante Kelly 

Duante Kelly attended Rockdale Country High School. He currently is majoring in Economics and Political Science at the University of Rochester. Duante aspires to work as a lawyer and government official rebuilding cities and infrastructure. He hope to receive some of these skills while interning in Neighborhood and Business Development. 

   
     

Sierra Kiss 

Sierra Kiss is from the Utica area where she graduated from Sauquoit Valley High School in 2011.  She’s currently studying Biomedical Photography at RIT. She’s interning with the Rochester Police Department’s Technicians Unit and gets to assist with crime scene processing and evidence analysis.  She enjoys the variety that her internship experience is giving her. In the future, she aspires to work in criminalistics and trace evidence analysis.

Qiaoran Li 

Qiaoran Li, also known as “Tempy,” grew up a in Jinan, capital city of Shandong province in China. In 2010, she graduated from Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colorado. Tempy attends Rochester Institute of Technology to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Management Information System. Currently, she is working as an IT intern at the information services bureau in the Information Technology Department. In the future, Tempy wishes to become a professional data scientist and continue her journey in big data expropriation.

Myles Mack-Mercer 

Myles Mack-Mercer, a senior at the University of Rochester, is studying political science, international relations and philosophy. At City Hall, Myles is working on efforts to expand and grow RocMusic—a program housed at the Gantt Center providing tuition-free music education to city youth. Myles is interning in the Office of the Mayor.

Wesline Manuelpillai 

Wesline Manuelpillai is currently a rising junior and Political Science major at the University of Rochester. This summer as an Urban Fellow interning at the Southeast Neighborhood Service Center, Wesline hopes to broaden her knowledge of Rochester and its surrounding communities. From the internship, she would like to gain a unique perspective of the inner workings of city government and learn about the issues the city faces. After completing her undergraduate degree, Wesline will continue her studies.

Dane Martella-Tasick 

Dane Martella-Tasick graduated from Bishop Kearney High School. Now, he attends the SUNY College at Brockport as a rising sophomore, Criminal Justice and Sociology double major. His future aspirations are to one day become a member of a federal law enforcement agency. From his internship with the RPD, Dane would hope to get an understanding of how law enforcement agencies act as a unit in a response to a call.

   
     

Giovanni Mendez 

 Giovanni Mendez attended Global Media Arts at Benjamin Franklin High School. He currently attends Monroe Community College. He is majoring in Criminal Justice and is interning with the RPD at the Neighborhood Service Centers Office. Giovanni’s future aspirations are to become a police officer and be able to help the community as well as keep the environment as safe as possible. He hopes to gain every bit of knowledge and experience from his internship.

   
     

Bobbi Mitchell 

Bobbi Mitchell graduated from East High School. She is currently enrolled at Monroe Community College as a rising sophomore and is interning in Neighborhood and Business Development. She plans to become a dentist in the city of Rochester. Bobbi hopes to gain experience through this summer program and to learn what working for the city is like.

Adam Mohamed 

Adam Mohamed went to Webster Schroeder High School and now goes to Monroe Community College. He majors in Criminal Justice and is interning at the Public Safety Building through the RPD Prep Program. In the future, he would like to become a police officer in the RPD and hopes to meet new people and gain new skills from his internship that will further his career.

   
     

Brandon Morgan 

Brandon Morgan graduated from South Seneca High School and is currently a rising junior studying Civil Engineering Technology at RIT. Brandon is interning with the Department of Environmental Services. Brandon would like to become a civil engineering officer in the United States Air Force and is looking forward to applying what he has learned in school to his internship.

Cody Nellis 

Cody Nellis graduated from Wayne Central High School in 2012 and is currently a junior attending Utica College. He’s majoring in Criminal Justice and interning with the Rochester Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit. Upon his graduation from college in 2016, he will pursue a job with a local police department. He considers his internship to be a great opportunity to gain first hand insight into police work that he otherwise would not have had.

Jahmar Plummer 

Jahmar Plummer is a 2008 graduate of Ridgeview High School in Orange Park, Florida. Jahmar is currently interning at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center as Executive Assistant to Mr. Joseph Floreano. This internship has provided Jahmar with a new career interest in hospitality management To this end Jahmar will be applying for admission to Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, where he hopes to develop and strengthen management and service delivery skills.

Justin Premonics 

 Justin Premonics graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology where he majored in Information Sciences and Technology. He is currently interning for the Information Technology Department Client Services and hopes to gain experience and more applicable knowledge about his chosen field of work. In the future, he would like to get hired full time, get a zero handicap in golf, and own a house.

Amber-Marie Rawls 

Amber-Marie Rawls attended Wilson Magnet High School. She is currently attending Monroe Community College studying Criminal Justice Police Science. This summer, Amber is interning with the Rochester Police Department and later hopes to become a U.S. Marshall. Out of the intern experience, she hopes to gain social skills, better interaction with people, great work ethics, time management, a better understanding of how people think and ways to help out others make a difference.

   
     

Louis Ressel 

Louis Ressel is a photographer who has been developing his art and skill since he was 15 years old. He’s a senior at the City College of New York studying studio art with a concentration in photography. Interning for the Communications Bureau, Louis will network with Rochester’s artists this summer to help make Rochester a city known for its art. His long-term career goals include being a filmmaker, freelance photographer and artist.

Alicia M. Rodriguez 

Alicia M. Rodriguez graduated from East High School.  She is currently finishing her final semester at Monroe Community College. Alicia is a Criminal Justice major interning for the Technical Support Services. Her future aspirations include getting a bachelo'rs degree in Criminal Justice, to pass all the requirements of becoming a police officer and to become the best officer that she can be. Alicia plans to take the knowledge that she has gained from this internship and apply it not only to her job but to everyday life.

Kevin Scantlen 

Kevin Scantlen is a rising senior at the University of Rochester majoring in American Studies. Kevin would like to pursue a career in radio upon graduation. Kevin is interning at the Southeast Neighborhood Service Center. His summer consists of compiling a report that documents what needs to happen in order to create a non-profit called Aging in Place. This nonprofit will provide volunteers and materials needed to repair roofs for seniors who would like to remain in their homes as they continue to age.

Jake Shepard 

Jake Shepard attended Churchville-Chili High School. He goes to Utica College and is a senior, who will graduate in December of this year. At Utica College, he majors in Criminal Justice-Economic Crime Investigation. He is interning with the Rochester Police Department Economic Crimes Unit. After he graduates, Jake hopes to pursue a career in federal law enforcement. From this internship this summer, he hopes to build his knowledge of law enforcement as well as build experience to help with securing a career in the future.

Amrita Singh is a graduate of Brighton High School and just finished her first semester at Monroe Community College. She is majoring in sociology and hopes to go into social justice activism. Currently, she is interning with the Bureau of Neighborhood Preservation and is looking forward to learning about and working with the Rochester community.

Tyler Swartz 

Tyler Swartz graduated from Greece Athena and is a rising senior studying Political Science and Criminal Justice at University of Albany. Tyler currently interns at Rochester Police Department at the Public Safety Training Facility. His future aspirations include working in federal law enforcement. He hopes to gain experience for future employment and to make connections that will help him become employed following graduation.

Damani Thompson 

Damani Thompson graduated from Edison Tech High School in 2012. He is currently a freshman at Monroe Community College majoring in Information Technology. In the future he plans to work in the I.T. field, but is still exploring his options. Damani is interning in the Information Technology Department and over the summer he plans to learn more about information technology.

Evan Thompson 

Evan Thompson attended high school at Middletown High School in Middletown, NY. He is currently enrolled at the Rochester Institute of Technology as a 3rd year Civil Engineering Technology major. This summer, Evan is interning with the Water Bureau. In the future, he hopes to work in the field that he's grown to love in college as a Civil Engineer, wherever that may be. Through Evan's internship with the Water Bureau, he hopes to gain valuable field experience as well as insight from experienced professionals.

Akyla Tomlinson 

Akyla Tomlinson is a rising senior at Canisius College. She is majoring in Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, and Finance. Akyla is interning with the Bureau of Accounting in the Finance Department. She hopes to gain further knowledge in these areas as well as develop the necessary skills that will allow her to become a successful accountant. It is Akyla’s goal to become a Forensic Accountant for the Internal Revenue Service and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Niambé Tomlinson 

Niambé Tomlinson was a part of the last graduating class of Nazareth Academy in 2010. She is a recent graduate from the University at Buffalo where she majored in Communications with a concentration in Journalism and Media Studies. In the future she hopes to see herself as head of Communications for the White House or as a news correspondent. This summer she hopes her internship in the Communication Bureau will help her improve the skills necessary for her to begin her career.

Zachary Tubb 

Zachary Tubb is an intern in Information Technology Department Client Services. He attended Rosewood High School and is a rising senior at SUNY College at Brockport studying computer science. Zachary’s aspirations include obtaining federal employment, starting a family, finding the perfect cup of coffee and authoring his memoirs on a beach. Mary Turner  

Mary Turner is currently a rising sophomore at The Ohio State University studying City and Regional Planning. This summer she is interning in the Southeast Neighborhood Service Center in the Neighborhood Preservation Department. Her future aspirations include obtaining her Master’s in Urban Planning so that she can become a licensed planner. From this internship, Mary hopes to gain knowledge of Neighborhood Preservation as it relates to Urban Planning and all the factors that tie into it.

Alexander Vivinetto  

Alexander Vivinetto is a graduate of Greece Athena High School. A student at SUNY Fredonia, he is majoring in Criminal Justice and Political Science. Alex is interning with the Rochester Police Department in the Public Safety Training Facility doing Active Shooter In-Service Training. In the future, Alex would like to be involved with any field of law enforcement.

   
     

Reginald Ward  

Reginald Ward is an intern in the Equipment Services Division of the Department of Environmental Services.

Mitch Wright 

Mitch Wright attended Webster Christian School. He is now a rising junior at Monroe Community College majoring in Criminal Justice. While interning for Rochester Police Department, he would like to learn the skills he needs to become a police officer.

   
     

Jessie Wurzer 

Jessie Wurzer is now a rising sophomore at The University of Notre Dame, studying Political Science and Spanish. This summer she is interning with the Bureau of Neighborhood Preservation. She hopes this internship will help in developing leadership and interpersonal skills needed in pursuing a career in politics and public service. She hopes to someday work for the U.S. State Department or another government agency where she will be able to use her Spanish skills.

Yiming Xue 

Yiming Xue, also known as “Tom,” is interning with the Rochester Police Department.  Tom was born and raised in China.  He will graduate from the University of New Haven in Connecticut in the summer of 2015.  He’s majoring in Forensic Science and Advanced Investigation.  With his internship in the RPD’s Technicians Unit, he enjoys learning about evidence processing, law application and video/security camera identification.

Marlana Zink  

Marlana Zink graduated from Brighton High School and currently attends Cornell University and will be a sophomore this fall, majoring in City and Regional Planning. Marlana will be spending her time with the Office of the Mayor as well as Neighborhood and Business Development. She hopes to get a practical understanding of the city’s roles and limits in improving the lives of its citizens. She hopes to one day help public resources become more sustainable and accessible in challenged neighborhoods.

Alexandra Zobel  

Alexandra Zobel is a rising Junior at SUNY Geneseo where she majors in Geology and minors in Mathematics. She is interning with the Department of Environmental Services. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school for a masters in Environmental Engineering. She hopes to gain a full understanding of how the City of Rochester handles clean-up projects and become an employee that her supervisors can count on to work independently at a job site.
