City of Rochester
News Release
(Friday, July 25, 2014) – City Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner Delmonize “Del” Smith and New York State Senators Ted O’Brien and Joe Robach joined owners Mary Spinelli, Christopher Spinelli and Jonathan Mervine at a ribbon cutting ceremony today to welcome Roc Brewing Co. to Rochester.
“With the growing demand for microbrew and craft-brewed beers, Roc Brewing Co. is a welcome addition to the city’s restaurant scene,” said Commissioner Smith. “I wish Mary, Jonathan and Chris good luck in this business venture. I look forward to seeing them thrive and grow in Southeast Rochester.”
Roc Brewing Co. is a microbrewery, specializing in the production of craft ales and focuses mainly on session ales in the American Craft Beer culture. They are currently working with a custom brew system with hopes to add a larger system for expanded capacity in future years. The Roc Brewing business plan anticipates that the brands will eventually attract a regional audience.
Mr. Mervine and Mr. Spinelli both studied economics at RIT and wanted to enter the craft-brew industry based on their experience with home brewing. They chose to open their business at the former Veterans of Foreign War post on South Union Street for its proximity to Downtown Rochester and the East End entertainment district.
“We are working hard to further establish a craft beer culture in the heart of Downtown and bring the great experience and economic benefit of this industry to the city we love,” said Christopher Spinelli. “We want to build on the success of Rochester’s great brewing history.”
The owners completely renovated the building to accommodate the microbrewery. This included replacing the front wall with new floor-to-ceiling windows. The business currently employs three people with hopes to add up to three more in future years.
Business hours are Wednesday 5 to 9 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday 3 to 11 p.m.
