News Release

(Thursday, October 30, 2014) – Mayor Lovely Warren was joined by Department of Recreation and Youth Services Commissioner Marisol O. Ramos-Lopez and Assistant Director of Recreation, Jim Farr for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to celebrate the completion of two newly-renovated park spaces at JR Wilson Park and the Avenue D R-Center.

“These beautiful new playgrounds are a welcome addition to the neighborhoods they serve,” said Mayor Warren. “The renovations are a shining example of our commitment to providing city youth ready access to safe and up-to-date facilities.”

Renovations at JR Wilson Park, located at 21 Burrows Street, included the demolition of outdated basketball courts, play equipment, fencing and an asphalt sidewalk adjacent to entry of park. New construction included asphalt and stone dust walking trails throughout the park, play sets with Fibar® safety surfacing and a basketball court. Landscaping was enhanced with new benches, fencing, trash receptacles, bike racks and shade trees.

Renovations at the Avenue D R-Center outdoor field, located at 200 Avenue D, included the demolition of outdated play equipment and a baseball field. New construction included pre-teen and tot play sets with Fibar® safety surfacing, swings, a ramp walkway with guide rail, and a new softball infield with backstop. Landscaping was enhanced with new terracing, surface painted games, benches, trash receptacles, bike racks and trees.

Both projects were designed by the City of Rochester Bureau of Architecture and Engineering team. Titan Development was the project construction contractor. Labella Associates provided Resident Project Representation services.

“R-Centers” are the City of Rochester’s fresh approach to recreation and community centers. R-Centers provide safe, accessible environments where youth and adults can take advantage of first-rate programs and facilities designed to promote healthy living, education, creativity, self-discovery and positive relationships.
