Description:

April 9 marks the 150th anniversary of Lee's surrender at Appomattox to Union forces led by General Grant.  This is generally recognized as the end of the Civil War.

To recognize this event in America's history, the National Park Service has requested that bells peal across the land at 3:15 p.m.  In Rochester the three sets of bells surrounding the Mt. Hope cemetery Civil War gravesites section will peal for 4 minutes in memory of the150th anniversary.     Other bells that will play are the University of Rochester Carillon, the bell at Mt. Hope cemetery gatehouse and the chimes at the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School.

Other churches with tower bells are being invited to play at the same time to recreate what it might have sounded like 150 years ago when bells were the primary means of letting the community know about important events.
