News Release -- City Pools and Durand Eastman Beach to Open for Summer Swimming Season

(Friday, June 12, 2015) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren announces the start of the 2015 summer swimming season with the opening of the Genesee Valley Park (GVP) Sports Complex Outdoor Pool and Durand Eastman Beach. The Genesee Valley Park pool, located at 131 Elmwood Ave., will open on Sunday, June 14 and Durand Eastman Beach opens on Sunday, June 21. Swimming will also be available at select locations around the city starting Monday, June 29.

“The City of Rochester offers many great things to do during the summer,” said Mayor Warren. “Our Genesee Valley Park Pool and the Durand Eastman Beach are two great examples of amenities people have come to rely on us for. As we work to provide more jobs, better educational opportunities and more vibrant neighborhoods, these family-friendly summer recreational activities provide vitality to our community.”

The GVP Sports Complex Aquatics Facility offers an outdoor, Olympic-sized swimming pool that includes a water slide. The facility also offers a full locker room. Swimmers can bring their own locks or purchase one for $4.50.

Between June 14 and 28, the GVP pool will be open Monday through Friday, 1 to 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Regular pool hours begin on Monday, June 29: Monday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission to the pool is $3 for adults, $1 for ages 6 through 17. Durand Eastman Beach consists of 5,000 feet of Lake Ontario waterfront. During last summer alone, the beach hosted approximately 120,000 visits. The beach is part of Durand Eastman Park, which features steep wooded slopes, valleys, scenic vistas, small lakes and assorted wildlife.

Durand Eastman Beach will offer supervised swimming daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the summer beginning June 21. For daily beach conditions, call the Monroe County Beach Hotline at 753-5887.

• Avenue D R-Center, 200 Avenue D
• Flint Street R-Center, 271 Flint St.
• Clinton-Baden Community Center, 485 N. Clinton Ave.
• East High School, 1801 E. Main St.
• Northeast & Northwest High School at the Frederick Douglass Campus, 940
   Fernwood Pk.
• Thomas Jefferson High School, 1 Edgerton Park
• Joseph C. Wilson Foundation Academy, 200 Genesee St.
