News Release

(Tuesday, May 17, 2016) –The City of Rochester’s 2015 Water Quality Report is available online at www.cityofrochester.gov/waterquality or by picking up a brochure at City branch libraries or Neighborhood Service Centers.

The report, completed annually by the City’s Department of Environmental Services, Bureau of Water, publishes the results of extensive water testing for more than 80 types of regulated microorganisms and chemical compounds. The City conducts these tests on drinking water as it makes its way from the City’s Hemlock Lake Water Treatment Plant, to storage reservoirs and then into city homes. All tests were found to be in compliance with State and Federal drinking water requirements.

“Maintaining the quality of Rochester’s water is always a top priority,” said Mayor Lovely A. Warren. “In a world struggling with drought and pollutants, this abundance of one of earth’s most precious resources places Rochester in an enviable position. The City is committed to delivering safe, pristine drinking water to each of our residents.”

The report also provides residents with updates on the water system and details on the source and treatment of drinking water. In 2015 numerous improvements were made to the water system, including $8 million in improvements to the Hemlock Filtration Plant, transmission system, distribution system, reservoirs and dams.

Some of the program highlights include: installation of 4.1 miles of new water main, including valves, hydrants and service lines, cleaning and lining 7.1 miles of existing water main in the City’s distribution system. Improvements to the filtration plant’s automation and controls and security systems were also made. Ongoing programs consisted of installing new water meters (more than 4,500 in 2015), inspecting all fire hydrants and operating main line valves, conducting water main flushing, sampling and testing the water.
