News Release - Statement from Mayor Lovely Warren on National Women’s Equality Day, Passing of Wyoma Best

City of Rochester

News Release

(Saturday, August 26, 2017) -- “As we recognize National Women’s Equality Day, I would like to remind the women in our community that while we have come so far, the fight for equality is not over.

We are still fighting for equal pay for equal work. The right to make our own healthcare decisions is still being used as a political football. We are still underrepresented in legislatures, in state houses, in board rooms and in the White House.

When Susan B. Anthony was fighting for a woman’s right to vote, she had many setbacks. She was ridiculed, and thrown in jail. But she kept pressing on. And we must do the same. We must speak up, and make our voices heard.

Also today, we recognize a trailblazing woman in our community who has passed away. Wyoma Best was the first African American woman reporter on Rochester television. She came into our living rooms every evening, and in doing so, showed all the young girls in our community what they could aspire to. She may no longer be with us, but her legacy lives on.

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone for the prayers and well wishes over the past week. I am feeling much better, and will be back to my regular schedule just as soon as my doctors clear me to do so.
