News Release - Final Flicks on the Bricks Event at the Public Market

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, Sept. 15, 2017) – The final night of Rochester’s inaugural Flicks on the Bricks free outdoor film series will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22 at the City of Rochester Public Market, 280 N. Union St.

The theme of the evening is Equal Rights Night and will feature short historical documentaries about the city of Rochester and its famous residents, Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony and a play entitled An Equal Right to Act.

“I am thrilled that the inaugural Flicks on the Bricks series has been so successful,” said Mayor Warren. “I can’t think of a better way to close out this event than by screening films and a play that showcase Rochester’s proud history of fighting for women’s suffrage and racial justice.”

The films showing will be:
• Because of Women like Her, a tribute to Susan B. Anthony and the local women’s suffrage movement; and
• Rediscovering Frederick Douglass, a tribute to Douglass, inspired by the recent discovery of an original photograph of the city resident and famed abolitionist.

The event will also feature a special performance of a new short play, An Equal Right to Act, a commemoration of the Rochester Women’s Rights Convention of 1848, produced by FirstLight Players, a ministry of the First Unitarian Church of Rochester.

Prior to the film showings, attendees are invited to walk through the ‘A’ Shed at the Market to see banners honoring the city’s suffragists and the centennial anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in New York State.

After the films and play, there will be a question-and-answer session with filmmaker Bill Schwappacher, producer Tiana Stephens and playwright Ira Srole.

Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase at the Market. Attendees should bring their own seating.
