News Release - City DES Asks For Cooperation to Remove Signs in Public Rights of Way

City of Rochester

News Release

(Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017) – The City of Rochester Department of Environmental Services (DES) today called upon contractors, political candidates and others who have placed signs in the public rights of way to kindly remove them.

The placement of signs in these areas is illegal and also causes sightline disruptions that can be dangerous for pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists. The signs in question are located near the edges of roads and highways, street corners, in medians, within roundabouts and other similar areas.

After receiving complaints about signs improperly placed in public rights of way, the City DES wanted to notify those who have placed signs improperly about this ordinance and, in doing so, to politely request their immediate removal.

As City DES crews prepare to start fall maintenance work any improperly placed signage remaining in the rights of way will be removed and recycled starting on Monday, Sept. 25. The City would prefer those who placed the signs to kindly remove them, allowing City resources to be used for other more pressing needs.

Signs that are placed in the public right of way are illegal and an obstruction. These signs will be removed.

If you have any questions regarding this issue please call 311 (428-5990 outside city limits).
