Cardboard City is a chance to spread awareness and raise money to fight homelessness. Participants sleep in cardboard houses they build out of boxes they bring with them.

Cardboard City 2011 will take place in Washington Square Park (map) starting on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 3:30 p.m. and concluding on Thursday, Aug. 11 at noon. The event is open to youth ages 13 to 21, and is hosted by the Youth Engaged with Service (YES) Committee, a collaboration between the City Bureau of Recreation's Youth Voice, One Vision (YVOV) youth council, the Monroe County Youth Bureau's Youth As Resources (YAR) youth philanthropy board and Nazareth College's Center for Service Learning.

This year, the YES Committee collaborates with peers from the Center for Youth, Hillside AIY and GAGV to raise awareness and donations for local homeless and runaway youth service providers. Youth will come together to share and compare issues and solutions for homelessness in our communities

The all-night portion of the event is limited to people who RSVP with Nick Ponterio. If you are interested please contact him. Do not show up and expect to stay overnight if you have not RSVPed.

All others are welcome to be there during the early evening and late morning hours.

For more information, contact Nick Ponterio at 428-7371 or ponterin@cityofrochester.gov. Download the participation form.
