This project was implemented by the City of Rochester and the
New York State Department of Transportation to improve
the safety and mobility of the nearly 75,000 vehicles that travel
this section of highway on a daily basis. The West Ridge Road,
Lake Avenue and Ridgeway Avenue intersection is one of the busiest
intersections in Monroe County and needed to be improved to provide
for a safe flow of vehicles at this busy crossroads. The
high volume of accidents and congestion at this intersection identified
the need for major improvements.
This section of West Ridge Road is also at the western end of the Route 104 expressway. The intent of this project is to provide a transition zone for the high speed westbound Route 104 expressway traffic by using traffic calming features such as parkway like treatments and horizontal curvature to reduce vehicle speeds.
The existing pedestrian bridge over West Ridge Road located just west
of the Veterans Memorial Bridge did not meet current Americans with Disability Act and minimum vertical clearance standards and needed to be improved. The new bridge will meet the current design standards and will also serve as a “gateway” to the City of Rochester. The bridge with it’s twin towers, decorative aesthetic treatments and signage will provide a visual queue to drivers that they are transitioning from the high speed expressway environment to a lower speed urban/pedestrian environment where people live and work.
The entrance to the City of Rochester will be defined by a new Pedestrian Bridge over West Ridge Road. This new Bridge with it’s historic towers, arched steel beams and grand stair cases will provide a signature pedestrian bridge welcoming visitors to the “Flower City.”
