El Camino Trail, Conkey Corner Park Highlight City-Community Partnership

ElCamino4-17--2012-018The El Camino: Butterhole-Seneca Park Trail is a multi-use pedestrian greenway that was adapted from an old railroad line. The 2.25-mile trail runs from Mill Street in High Falls all the way to the Seneca Park pedestrian bridge. The Trail provides a safe, continuous pedestrian and bicycle route accessible to citizens from all walks of life, that links key destinations in the city.

About the Project

The City of Rochester frequently collaborates with non-profits, neighborhoods, agencies and organizations, and even individuals to improve the city's quality of life.  One shining example of such collaboration is the Genesee Land Trust's work with the City to establish the El Camino recreational trail in the northeast quadrant of the city, and a complementary neighborhood parkat the corner of Conkey and Clifford Avenues.

elCamino104BridgeThe cost of this project is approximately $1.5 million. In addition to funding by the City of Rochester, support has been provided by grants from the Federal Highway Administration, New York State Department of State, New York State Department of Transportation, and Eastman Kodak Company via the Nature Conservancy and Genesee Land Trust. In addition, the Genesee Land Trust is provided assistance with design, fundraising, organizing the neighborhood, and other key elements of the project.

In addition to the El Camino Trail project in the northeast quadrant, the City and the Genesee Land Trust have collaborated to build the Conkey Corner Park. This park provides an important community space in the heart of a challenged neighborhood. The park, which includes a playground and gardens, celebrated its opening at a ribbon-cutting in May 2010.
