Community Relations and Education

The Community Relations and Education Unit (CREU) provides public education outreach to the community by addressing life safety issues.

Among its other duties, CREU oversees the Department's free smoke detector and battery give away program. Over 550 smoke detectors and 100 batteries were installed free of charge in City homes in 2000.

Firefighters from the Unit also conducted door to door surveys on 52 streets checking for smoke detectors, installing new ones if needed and distributing information on fire safety and prevention.

The Rochester Fire Department, Wegman's Food Markets and Chase Pitkin introduced the WKids Fire Safety House in June of 2000. This portable house was used in 19 presentations involving over 2,300 children who learned how to detect fire hazards and escape from their home in the event of a fire.

CREU conducted 531 fire safety presentations reaching over 36,000 children and adults. Presentations were made to groups from the City School District, City recreation centers, the YMCA, senior housing complexes, neighborhood and church groups, local businesses and others who requested information on fire safety.
