Fire Department Community Outreach

Fire Safety Presentations

The Rochester Fire Department is committed to doing all it can to keep our community safe. Our Community Outreach staff offers fire safety presentations that can be tailored to your community group or organization.

Topics can include: cooking safety, home safety for children, smoke and carbon monoxide detector installation, Exit Drills in the Home (EDITH), emergency preparedness, and more. Unfortunately, due to staffing considerations, we cannot accommodate all requests. Non-profit groups serving the City of Rochester hosting meetings or events with more than 25 people will be given first priority. Please also be aware that our presence may be limited during peak times of the year when our first priority must be emergency response. Please allow three week notice.

Smoke Detector Program

The Community Outreach Unit conducts neighborhood canvassing by going door-to-door to check if city residents in that neighborhood have active smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. We take requests from city residents who need these items or assist in installing or inspecting them.

Click here  for further information or call 311 to request a free smoke detector, for qualified residents..

Open House

In an effort to create a stronger bond between the Fire Department and the community, the Fire Chief continues to sponsor an open house program at neighborhood fire stations. It is his hope that through this program the Fire Department will educate the community about fire safety, injury prevention and control, health and wellness and career exploration.

Each Open House, teams the Fire Department with local health organizations who provide glucose testing, blood pressure checks, nutritional information and anti-drug literature as well as other topical information relevant to the community. The Open Houses are sponsored by Tops Friendly Markets, who supply a variety of refreshments to all who attend. Hundreds of residents take advantage of the opportunity to meet their local firefighters at these events.

Check with the city's events calendar to find out when and where the next open house will be held in your community.

Fire Safety Smoke House

The safety house, purchased and donated to the City by Wegmans Food Markets and Chase Pitkin, is a mobile classroom with child sized rooms featuring real life "safety hazards" that allow students to safely experience the sights, sounds and dangers associated with fire in the home. It has been used at numerous schools, churches, festival sites, shopping areas and other community venues to teach children and adults fire safety and prevention
