On the third Saturday of each month you will find Margaret O'Neill in the Market Office from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. offering free healthy tastings.
The goal of Market Tastings with Margaret is to showcase fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables and help make people comfortable trying new foods. Many of us purchase and prepare the same foods that we grew up with. We see new and different fruits and vegetables at the Market, but hesitate to buy them because they are unfamiliar, and we don’t know what to do with them.
The recipes used at Market Tastings with Margaret showcase a wide variety of fresh, seasonal produce. Margaret has three criteria for selecting the recipes. They must be (1) tasty - so that people enjoy them; (2) healthy; and (3) easy to prepare. Testing new recipes and demonstrating how to prepare them is great fun for Margaret. Growing up on a family farm, she learned to cook and bake from her mom (a home economist) and through ten years as a 4-H member. Upon earning a degree in Home Economics Education, she taught for several years and then worked as an educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension, in both the 4-H Youth Development and Nutrition and Health programs. After retiring from Extension, Margaret joined the Friends of the Rochester Public Market, and since 2008 has managed the Market Token Program and Market Bounty Tours, in addition to the Market Tastings with Margaret.
