News Release

(Monday, Oct. 5, 2015) – Mayor Lovely Warren and Fire Chief John Schreiber proclaimed the week of Oct. 4 through Oct. 10 as National Fire Prevention Week in Rochester Monday to bring attention to the fact that most fires in homes, workplaces and schools can be prevented with a few simple precautions. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Here the Beep Where you Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm.”

“Fire Prevention Week is an annual reminder that many house fires are entirely preventable and that the injuries from these fires can also be prevented with a working smoke alarm,” said Mayor Warren. “I encourage citizens to contact the Rochester Fire Department during Fire Prevention Week to make sure their homes are as fireproof as possible. Preventing fires helps us reach our goal of safer neighborhoods, which contributes to the creation of more jobs and providing a quality education for all of our children.”

“A working smoke alarm can literally be the difference between life and death in the event of a fire,” said Chief Schreiber. “A smoke alarm is your shield. It gives you time to get out and get to safety, and gives the firefighters a head start on fighting the fire.”

National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to fall on the week that includes Oct. 9 in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and a lesser known but equally devastating forest fire that consumed the town of Peshtigo, Wis. on the same day. The annual theme is determined by the National Fire Protection Association, which is partnering with the Rochester Fire Department.

The Fire Marshal’s Office will administer several fire drills at schools and workplaces during Fire Prevention Week. Monday’s ceremony followed a fire drill at City Hall.
