City of Rochester

News Release

(Wednesday, June 27, 2018) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren celebrated the grand re-opening of the Campbell Street R-Center today, marking the completion of an extensive renovation that will allow the City to provide a new slate of services.

“This upgrade secures the future of the Campbell Street R-Center as a safe place to learn and have fun while making friends and memories,” said Mayor Warren. “And this renovation also gives us a model to expand the role of our R-Centers to meet the needs of all our residents and help us accomplish our goals of creating more jobs, safer/more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities for our children.”

The $1.8 million renovations allow the City to expand its service menu at the Center to include more educational programing for children and offer services to adults and families. The Center has been closed since April of 2017.

The Campbell Street R-Center, 524 Campbell St., has been renovated to become a Sports Magnet Site, offering specialized coaching and training for basketball, football, baseball, lacrosse, soccer and handicap accessible sports. It also has a brand new handicapped accessible spray park and new playgrounds.

Inside, the Center has new facilities for educational programs and an after-school academy. A new kitchen will be used for nutritional cooking classes and a computer lab will give adults a place to search for jobs.

Other upgrades include improvements to the gymnasium, an upgraded electrical system, a new metal roof, fencing, benches and bike racks. The City also has plans to demolish a vacant house adjacent to the Center and expand the campus.

Project funding was provided by City of Rochester and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY).
