News Release -- Mayor Warren Declares Heat Emergency for Weekend

 City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, June 29, 2018) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren has initiated a Cool Sweep Heat Emergency operation for Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1, in anticipation of forecasted temperatures exceeding 90 degrees. Cool Sweep — presented by Avangrid Foundation and RG&E — is the City’s annual public safety and customer service program that is triggered when the forecast calls for excessive heat.

During a Cool Sweep heat emergency, R-Centers and libraries are opened to serve as cooling centers, hydrants are opened, and hours at Genesee Valley Park Pool and Durand Eastman Beach are extended.

While Cool Sweeps typically don’t take place on Sundays, the forecast of excessive heat necessitated the opening of the Carter Street R-Center, the Phyllis Wheatley Library and the hydrants at School #41 and Baden Park to provide relief to residents.

If outside, residents are reminded to stay safe by drinking plenty of fluids, wearing loose fitting clothes, and taking frequent breaks while working. Please bring pets inside and do not leave them in hot vehicles for any amount of time.
