News Release

(Sunday, March 31, 2019) --The Rochester Fire Department responded to a fire on Langham Street in which an adult female was found deceased Sunday morning.

The fire at 9 Langham St., a single-family residence, was reported at 7:17 a.m. and the first units arrived at 7:22 a.m. Firefighters were able to suppress the bulk of the blaze within 15 minutes upon arrival and discovered the remains of an adult female inside the residence. The single-alarm fire was declared under control at 7:55 a.m.

“We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim of this fire,” said Rochester Fire Chief Will Jackson. “It is always a terrible day for the Rochester Fire Department when we deal with a loss of life.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation but there is no evidence of suspicious activity at this time. The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the cause of death.

This is one of several fires the RFD has responded to in recent weeks. However, there is no connection between them. Approximately two-thirds of the recent fires occurred due to unattended cooking or careless discharge of smoking materials.

“We encourage all residents to practice fire safety,” said Chief Jackson. “Respect fire at all times. Keep matches and lighters away from children. Pay attention to open flames while cooking and make sure cigarettes and smoking materials are properly discarded. Make sure every home has a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector. Remember the acronym EDITH: Exit Drill In The Home. Have an escape plan with a meeting place outside the home and practice it with your family.”

If you don’t have a working smoke alarm, you can obtain one from the RFD by calling 311.
