News Release - City Seeking Applicants for Police, Fire and 911

City of Rochester

News Release

(Thursday, May 2, 2019) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren announced today that the City of Rochester is currently accepting applications for all three of the City’s uniformed public safety departments: The Rochester Police Department; the Rochester Fire Department and the Department of Emergency Communications (911).

“A career in public safety offers a chance to earn a good living while working each day to improve the lives of others,” said Mayor Warren. “It is very unusual for all three public safety departments to be recruiting at the same time, so I encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity.”

All three departments offer excellent salary and benefits packages along with opportunities to advance in rank. The job titles, application deadlines and exam dates for each agency are as follows:

• 911 Dispatcher: Application deadline is June 30; exam dates are Aug.12 through 23.
• Police Officer: Application deadline is Aug. 5; exam date is Sept.14.
• Firefighter: Application deadline is Sept. 18; exam date is Nov.2

The departments will be conducting recruitment operations in the community over the next several weeks and months. A major goal of the public safety recruitment campaign will be to further improve the diversity of each agency.

“It is imperative that the men and women who are sworn to protect and serve the citizens of Rochester reflect the population they serve,” said Mayor Warren “Diversity improves the public’s trust in these departments, and public trust is a major component of public safety.”

All three jobs require applicants to take a written exam and successfully complete a background check. The Police Officer and Firefighter jobs also have physical fitness requirements. Each job has a different residency requirement.

Job descriptions, applications requirements and application forms these are now available on the City website: cityofrochester.gov/publicsafetyjobs/.
