 News Release

(Wednesday, May 29, 2019) — The City of Rochester Public Market opened at its current North Union Street site on June 1, 1905, marking the first day of what has now resulted in more than a century’s worth of service to the community.

In celebration of the Public Market's 114th birthday, Market staff will roll out a commemorative event to honor the occasion. On Sat., June 1, 2019, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., a Market History Booth will be set up outside the enclosed “B” Shed. Making appearances at the booth will be former and current City historians Nancy Rosin and Christine Ridarsky, who will provide patrons with fascinating facts about the Market's marvelous history. Artifacts related to the history of the Public Market will be on display, along with Rosin’s 2005 book commemorating the Market’s centennial, The Hands that Feed Us: 100 Years at the Rochester Public Market, which will be available for purchase. Patrons can also be part of a special virtual Market birthday card!

The History Booth will also receive a very special visit from Tom Romano. Tom, who grew up in the Marketview Heights neighborhood and will turn 100 years old in September, has been a Market patron for more than 90 years! Tom will share stories and tales about the Public Market that span from the 1920s to the present time. In addition, Market Director Jim Farr, who has run the facility for over 25 years, will make an appearance to share more stories and answer questions about Rochester’s iconic Public Market.
