News Release - NeighborWorks Rochester to Hold 4th Annual Celebration of Rochester Neighbors “Citywide Block Party” at the Public Market

City of Rochester

News Release

(Thursday, May 30, 2019) — NeighborWorks® Rochester will hold its fourth annual Celebration of Rochester Neighbors at the City of Rochester Public Market, 280 N. Union St., from 5 – 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019.

The free event honors and celebrates the great people who help make our city neighborhoods strong. Recognition will be given to volunteers who are making a difference in each of the city’s four quadrants at the neighborhood level, as well as one individual who serves as a leader in the overall Rochester community. All of the honorees are city residents who exemplify a vision for a better Rochester and who work to better their neighborhoods or spark change by inspiring and engaging others.

Much like a block party for the entire city, the event will feature live music, free food, children’s activities and community organization tables and exhibits. All are welcome to attend.

This year’s recipients of the Community Leadership Award are Devon Reynolds, Sr. and Jovan Bradley, owners of Brothers & Sisters Unisex Salon. In addition to running a successful business, Devon and Jovan offer much more than haircuts, often serving as father figures, problem solvers and community change makers. The two organized a school supply giveaway to ensure neighborhood youth were prepared for the school year, and when they heard area kids were going hungry, Devon and Jovan started Sweet Ida’s Food Pantry to help feed families. In addition, their hair salon is turned into a Haunted Halloween shop in October, and in November, Thanksgiving dinners are supplied to families in need.

Along with the Community Leadership Award, four Community Champion Awards will also be presented to outstanding individuals at the June 3rd celebration.

Support for the event comes from the City of Rochester Public Market, the City of Rochester, LNB Banking, JP Morgan Chase, Hillside Kitchen, Five Star Bank, Greater Rochester Association of Realtors, Heveron & Company, Site Hub, Northwest Bank, Fairport Mortgage, and Gods and Gladiators. City neighborhood associations, block clubs, area non-profit organizations and businesses will be on hand to provide additional assistance.

The event will also kick off NeighborWorks® Week in Rochester. NeighborWorks® Rochester, an affiliate of NeighborWorks® Community Partners, builds strong neighborhoods by educating and counseling new homeowners, as well as by providing loan services and energy-savings programs.
