City Council
Swearing-In Ceremony and Organizational
Meeting
Today the Rochester City Council swore-in
the four District Councilmembers and elected its leadership for the next two
years at the Council’s biennial Organizational Meeting. District
Councilmembers LaShay D. Harris – South District, Mary Lupien – East District,
Michael A. Patterson – Northeast District and Jose Peo – Northwest District
took their Oath of Office to serve a term through December 31, 2023.
Councilmember Loretta C. Scott was
re-elected by the Council to continue serving as Council President and
Councilmember Willie Lightfoot was re-elected as Council Vice President.
Scott and Lightfoot will serve in these leadership roles until December 31,
2021. Council President and At-Large Member, Loretta C. Scott first
joined the City Council in January 2010, and was re-elected to four-year terms
in November 2013 and 2017. Council Vice-President and At-Large Member
Willie Lightfoot began his service on the Council in January 2018 and prior to
that served as a member of the Monroe County Legislature.
“As we welcome a new decade, I am
reinvigorated by the work that lies ahead and the positive impact that our work
will have on the residents of our great City,” stated Council President
Scott. “I am grateful to my colleagues for the opportunity to continue to
lead the Council as President and am humbled by their continued support of me
in this role.”
“I am thankful to my peers for selecting
me to serve as their Vice President. This is truly an honor and I look
forward to working with President Scott and my fellow Councilmembers to ensure
that we continue to build on the great work that the Council has been doing to
improve the lives of our constituents,” said Vice President Lightfoot.
City Council also announced its committee
structure for 2020-21, there will be four standing Council Committees.
The names of the Committees and the Chair of each is as follows: the Finance
Committee, chaired by Councilmember Malik D. Evans; the Neighborhood &
Business Development Committee, chaired by Councilmember Michael A. Patterson;
the Parks & Public Works Committee, chaired by Councilmember Mitch Gruber;
and the Public Safety, Youth & Recreation Committee, chaired by Vice
President Willie J. Lightfoot.
At the Organizational Meeting, Hazel L.
Washington was reappointed as the City Clerk, and she too will serve through
December 31, 2021. In addition, the City Council adopted the Rules of
Council and designated the Official Newspapers for the City.
The official start time for the monthly
Council Meeting will remain the same, with a start time of 7:30pm, and Speak to
Council will continue to start at 6:30pm. The legislation adopted at the
meeting today is attached, and it includes the Council’s meeting schedule for
2020.
