News Release -- Motorists Advised to Show Caution During Winter Storm

City of Rochester

News Release

(Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren today urged all Rochester-area residents and motorists to exercise caution during the evening and morning commutes due to the forecasted winter storm.

“Please be careful,” Mayor Warren said. “Rochesterians are used to snow and ice, but it is never a good idea to be complacent when dealing with Mother Nature. Be patient, use your winter driving skills and stay safe.”

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Monroe County from 6 p.m. today until 6 a.m. Saturday, calling for “mixed precipitation through the early overnight hours, then heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 15 inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch, with winds gusting as high as 40 mph later tonight and Friday.” A Winter Weather Advisory has also been issued, calling for “freezing drizzle with additional ice accumulations.”

The City Department of Environmental Services will commence plow runs of main arterials and residential roads once enough snow has fallen to warrant a run. Sidewalk plowing will begin if accumulation reaches 4 inches.

The City urges motorists to observe all parking regulations, especially the alternate-side parking rule. A vehicle parked on the wrong side of the road can impede a plow run for the entire street.

PlowTrax, the City’s snow plow tracker application, will be up and running so residents can check plowing progress in real time. Residents should also keep their sidewalks and fire hydrants clear and bring pets inside. Shoveling or plowing snow onto sidewalks and streets is illegal.
