News Release

(Friday, February 14, 2020) – In celebration of Black History Month, the City of Rochester’s Black Heritage Committee, in partnership with the Rochester City School District’s Department of African and African-American Studies and Garth Fagan Dance, will present a Community Celebration on Friday, February 29, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Hochstein School of Music, 50 N. Plymouth Ave.

The evening will feature dynamic performances by internationally acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance and accomplished poet and recording artist Amir Sulaiman.

In addition to providing the community with an evening of stellar entertainment, one of the primary purposes of the event is to expose city youth to arts and culture by giving them a unique opportunity to experience live performances by world-class artists.

A total of 250 free tickets will be given to youth primarily in grades 3 – 8 who reside in the city of Rochester to attend the performance.  Students will also be provided with free transportation to and from the event, prime seating at Hochstein, and an opportunity to meet and greet the Garth Fagan dancers after the show.

In addition, a total of 60 students will receive community scholarships ranging from $250 - $1,000 that will enable them to receive two months of dance instruction at Garth Fagan Dance. Scholarship recipients will be selected by their schools.

The free student tickets and community scholarships are made possible in part thanks to the generosity and support of local sponsors, especially Eric and Michelle Daniels, lead sponsors for the event.

Other sponsors include Ocusight Eye Care Center, Gallina Development Corp., RocGrowth, GreenSpark Solar, First Capital Payments & Processing and I. Gordon Corporation.

In addition, thanks to a sponsorship from Endless Highway, Inc., several special scholarships will be created for students with mobility (wheelchairs) issues.  Student recipients will be selected in conjunction with School #29 and other community agencies.

The general public is also invited to enjoy the Community Celebration. General admission tickets for this special evening of entertainment are currently on sale for $25 and can be purchased at City Hall, 30 Church St. in Room 100A.
