Central Library News Release
(Feb. 3, 2020)
Rochester, NY – The Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County will host two discussion
sessions with Joshua Rashaad McFadden, creator of “Evidence,” a public art
project that uses portraiture and archival imagery to explore concepts related
to identity, masculinity, history, race, sexuality and social justice.
Both
sessions will be held on Friday, February 7, at the Central Library of
Rochester and Monroe County, Rundel Memorial Building, 115 South Ave. The first session will take place from 10
a.m. – noon for youth ages 13 – 19, while the second session will be held from 4
– 6 p.m. for ages 18 and older.
Original
issues of The North Star, the newspaper published by Frederick Douglass,
will be featured from the library’s archival collections at both sessions.
In
McFadden’s hometown debut, “Evidence” features images of Black men photographed
in the North and South, serving as documentation of their existence. The
North Star, archival imagery, as well as present-day essays and prose by
Jireh B. Holder, Dyllón Burnside and K. Anthony Jones will also be featured. The exhibit will be on display at Visual Studies
Workshop, located at 31 Prince St., from February 21 through June 27.
McFadden
has been recognized as one of Time Magazine’s “American Voices” and received
the Duke University Archive of Documentary Arts Collection Award for
Documentarians of Color. McFadden’s “I Am A Man” photographic series with
Smithsonian Magazine won him the 2018 Communication Arts Award of Excellence.
